COLLABORATIVE PROJECT

Katya McMullen

PHOTOGRAPHER

Katya is a film photographer, and a close friend of mine who had mentioned how she wanted me to help her develop a brand identity for herself. Branding a photographer felt like a new challenge I had never attempted before, so I was excited to collaborate with her and her beautiful photography.

the team.

As this was a collaborative project, to achieve the scope of work I wanted to do, I knew I needed another great designer and that came in the form of Wendy Dith, an amazing print and editorial designer. With the team formed, we quickly divided up the work.

the deliverables.

The scope of this brand-identity project included a new web layout, logo, business cards, postcard set, and publication design.

PHASE 1

Logo + Brand Identity

We started with MANY sketches leaning in the direction of a modern, logotype. However, we ended up spending a lot of time in this phase as we struggled to figure out a mark that would encapsulate her aesthetic.

the direction.

While we went through many rounds of refining, we eventually found ourselves pivoting as Katya found herself drawn to a more vintage, floral aesthetic.

brand guidelines.

PHASE 2

web refresh.

Katya’s website already had the bones of a style we like: a gallery layout, with minimal type. We kept how she divided up her work using sections, continuing to build out a “places” and “music” page while adding a new “people” page.

new site

For the new site, we wanted to simplify the navigation as well as give Katya the opportunity to update her site with photos taken over the past couple years.

PHASE 3

printed materials.

PT.1

business cards.

One of the things Katya wanted was some new business cards, so we leaned into a vintage, minimal typographic layout paired with her logo.

PT.2

The first format we thought would highlight her work uniquely was a postcard package that curated her favorite photos over recent years.

postcards.

Each card provides context to the photo on the front, such as the subject of a portrait or the location it’s taken in.

PT.3

publication.

The publication served to highlight a larger breadth of work, while showcasing some of her best photos in a large format.

Thanks again to Katya for being an amazing person to work with, and to Wendy for bringing her knowledge and enthusiasm to this project.
