Small-Scale Social Change
This project was a collaboration between The Office of Ordinary Things and my BFA cohort. The prompt was to pick a social topic of our interest, and center our project around creating change through any method of our choice.
MY TOPIC OF CHOICE:
Grief
This topic was of personal interest to me and I soon decided that I wanted to create a resource that challenged the visual language around how grief is presented and talked about.
Q’s I wanted to answer:
What kind of resources do I wish I had when I was younger?
What can I add to this conversation that hasn’t already been said but if so, how can I say it differently?
ULTIMATE GOAL: Helping someone navigate through grief in a way that is healthy, supportive, and makes their experience feel validated.
Idea Development
For connecting both the social media posts & the zines, I knew I wanted both to have the same visual style. I set into doing a lot of research on the three various topics, and as I condensed the most important information, it helped drive my visual storytelling.
I immediately had a certain illustration style in mind: reassuring and a visual that puts the human experience at the forefront.
1st component
Social Media Campaign
For one week, I decided to run a social media campaign that talked about 3 different aspects of grief: Taking care of oneself when grieving, how to support others who are grieving, and what collective grief looks like in a community.
ZINE SPREADS
Special Thanks to The Office of Ordinary Things for the amazing prompt and letting us visit them during our San Francisco Trip!
Additional Thanks to the Counseling Center at Western Washington University and the Bayside Therapy Offices for helping get this resource to people who could most benefit from it.
2nd component
Zine
With all the research and information I gathered for the campaign, I also wanted to create a physical zine that I could give to therapy offices, and spread around my college campus.
I ended up making around 50 copies that I then distributed to connections I made to therapy offices in Bellingham and around campus!
